NUTRITION & AGE

Why B12 deserves attention after 50

The Yurz Journal

The amount you need is only part of the story. How your body absorbs a nutrient matters, too.

A small nutrient with important work

Vitamin B12 supports normal nerve function and healthy red blood cells. It occurs naturally in animal foods and is added to some fortified foods. A varied eating pattern is a useful place to start.

What can change with age

Many older adults produce less stomach acid, making it harder to release B12 from food. The NIH notes that people over 50 should get most of their B12 from fortified foods or supplements, which are easier to absorb in this situation. Certain digestive conditions and medicines can also affect B12 status.

Make it personal

If you are concerned about low B12, ask your healthcare professional whether testing is appropriate. Fatigue or changes in sensation can have many causes; a supplement should not replace evaluation. The form and amount that suit you depend on your diet, health, and medicines.

Your next small step

Bring a list of your foods, medicines, and supplements to your next visit. Read the Supplement Facts and directions on any product you use. A thoughtful routine starts with knowing what you need.
